James Palmer’s grave in a quiet corner of Dagenham Parish Churchyard. The Old Vicarage can be seen in the background. Authors’ collection

James Palmer was buried on 23 November, and on the following day Dagenham’s vicar, Dr Moore, preached a special sermon in his memory. The community gathered to pay their respects to one who had served it for so long, and to contribute to a collection on behalf of Palmer’s widow Rebecca and her children. She remained in Dagenham, and three years later, at the time of the 1881 census, she was living in Church Street close to her son Alfred’s pub, the Rose & Crown, and supporting herself as a dressmaker.
